I use a Shock Doctor Gel mouthguard at the minute and haven’t had any problems with it at all but after reading about Custom Made Gumshields i’m considering getting one… As well as the dentist fitting one there are a few websites out there that deal in doing custom guards after you send them your imprint. I can’t post any links but they look quite good. Is there anyone out there who has a custom guard who can give me their opinions on them?
i have heard they are supposed to be good and you would like to think so for the price i looked into having one made a few years ago and was quoted £300.
i just decided to stick with wat i was used to.
sorry i could’nt be of help John.
Well definatly I would recommend a custom fitted shield, I have a boil and bite one as well but this was under advice as its always best to have one if your fighting in case of a lost one…and i think they are not really effective but to a degree do the job for very light sparring as in the past i have actually found myself biting right through them..
My dentist fitted mine and cost approx £78 though some do charge up to £500 so shop around..
i would definatly Not reccomend going to a mould, send and deliver firm on the internet, as when i got mine fitted the dentist did it and made sure everything was perfect, tight and that it was comfortable for me to use in my fight.
no matter how precise your mould you send, they can never be perfect were as my dentist was able to tweak and file ther odd little bit for my comfort and you can’t get this done on the internet….though if your scared of the dentist like half the population then i suppose its an option..lol
Everyones different, so lets hear you thoughts on this Important subject
I had no idea they could get that expensive! The one i was looking at on the net that was a mould, send and deliver thing was around £40 I must admit Mark that i didn’t think about the dentist being able to do adjustments based on your feedback when you are actually getting fitted so if i am going to get one it will have to be from the dentist… Can i ask Mark if you notice the difference in terms of breathing and improved performance or is this a marketing gimmick from companies that make custom mouth guards?
I have a boil and bite mouth gaurd but when i wear it i start feeling a bit sick and start wretching.I take it that thats not normal. How am i going to be able to compete in the ring if it keeps happening
this happened me, it happens because the gum shield it too long, you simply need to cut it down, but do it a little at a time, you dont wanna cut of too much
I find the boil and bite gumsheilds more of a distraction as they can move around more freely than a fitted one.My dentist only charged £35 for mine I would recomend a fitted one to anyone whether its just for sparring or competing
Hi aidy i know it doesn’t seem normal but it is mr Murray and Mr Masterson always tell people to wear there mouth guard even for 5 minutes a day so you can get used to it.
i would definitely get a custom made bit guard if i could get it at the=at price i can’t believe you got yours James for 35 thats great.

In the Ultimate fighter season 9 (the Uk vs the USA) One of the english competitors had the same problem. What the advice they gave to him was to get a properly fitted mouth guard, they got him some hypnosis if your into that.
To aidy, as Andrew says, cut it back a little at a time, thats exactly why your feeling that wretching feeling…
Ref the difference in terms of breathing and improved performance, yes i would say there is, maybe this is because of the more sealed comfort fit and the fact that if you wear it often enough it becomes part of your mouth, if you can understand what i mean…it definatly did not hinder my fight nor when im sparring and sometimes i do really forget that its there, also im not sort of dying to spit it out if im breathless or panting after a hard workout as im able to take in a good breath..
But at £35 its definatly a bargain for a professional piece of protection..
Thats if you can get an appointment with your dentist,
I had to wait 3 months last year to get an appointment, next time its the rusty ole pliers and a bottle of Gin..lol
Lisa where on earth were you quoted £300, I take it that’s for the whole family’s.
My experience those cheap gum shields at £3 and £4 a piece especially as there prone to being lost or misplaced as I have done many a time.
The only thing you need to do occasionally is remould it which takes only a few minutes.

BTW I’m only after telling someone I the gym that I have never had any problem using those gum shields in all the years of doing 1000’s of rounds of sparring, my teeth are still intact, I’ll not say who it is, but anyway he said “That’s ok but look at the state of your nose.”
bottom line is, it’s whatever makes you feel comfortable, because what’s right for me may not be right for you… but £300 - that’s a lot of mould your own gum shields. You could nearly get a new set of teeth for that.
