Ciaran Magill (Right) in action at the Prokick Gym

Ciaran Magill is Well-Fit

Northern Ireland’s most famous kickboxing name ProKick opened up in Lurgan five months ago at the brand new ‘Well-Fit’ Training Centre. The former world professional four weight world champion, Billy Murray who officially opened the new gym, is well pleased with the progress of the Lurgan kickboxing wannabe’s.

Ciaran Magill came up to the Prokick gym  with club instructor James Gillen for a special Saturday afternoon spar with some of Prokicks champions. Ciaran did extremely well, he showed great promise and a hunger for the fight game. At this rate it won’t be long until we’re promoting a show in Lurgan with a full team from the area. Murray will speak to Stevie McQuigan (Owner of Well-Fit) shortly about staging an event in Lurgan

A special thanks to the Well-Fit team and of course our Prokick instructor and WKN Irish super heavyweight champion ‘Big’ James Gillen, who is doing a fabulous job with the squad.”

Brooklands Cup - Week 45 Winner is Mark McCann

Kickboxing king Billy Murray has used a trophy presented to him to inaugurate a novel new year-long competition for young members of his celebrated ProKick Gym. The Brooklands ProKick Cup is presented each week through the next 52 weeks to the most improved ProKick kid of that week. A special shield has also been minted with space for 52 names. At the end of the year, the person with the most names on the shield will be presented with the Cup to keep for good, with their achievements immortalised in the shield which will go on display in the gym.

“I was presented with the cup by Mr McCartney, the Principal at Brooklands Primary School in Dundonald after a unique event at the school when I took 200 of the pupils through a specially tailored training class,” Murray explained. “I felt there was no better way to keep that cup as a celebration of the achievements of kids than to inaugurate the competition.

Challenge for the Brooklands Cup
Challenge for the Brooklands Cup

Brooklands Cup final stages

Nearly one year on after the Prokick gym were presented a trophy for performing kickboxing demonstrations at Brooklands Primary school – the Cup has been turned into a weekly competition for the most improved junior Kickboxing student, known simply as ‘The Brooklands Cup’ with the conclusion in less than 8 weeks time.

The Cup rotates every Saturday at the Prokick Gym and is one of the weekly highlights at Ireland’s premier kickboxing club. The competition lasts for a year, the person with the most names on the shield will be presented with the Cup to keep for good, with their achievements immortalised on a shield which will go on display in the gym.

Competition has never been so hot amongst the Prokick junior members. With the final weeks approaching for the infamous Brookland’s Cup and with none of the kids winning it twice out of the 44 weeks that has gone by, they’re all out to prove that they are best and most deserving.

“Each week, we take good attitude, improvement in technique, respect to others and attendance into consideration when choosing the winner. It’s getting harder to pick a winner every week. So far we’ve had 44 winners out of the 80 kids that frequent the Prokick gym every Saturday morning.” Said Prokick chief Billy Murray

“I was presented with the cup by Mr McCartney, the Principal at Brooklands Primary School after a unique event at the school when I took 200 of the pupils through a specially tailored training class,” Murray explained.

“I felt there was no better way to keep that cup as a celebration of the achievements of kids than to inaugurate the competition. “Since it’s inception in June 2007 it’s proved a hit with the young ProKickers who are all very keen to get their hands on it. All the winners are setting quite a standard for others to follow!”

The Prokick team hope to make the last week of the Brooklands Cup a grand event day for the junior members with all the winners getting their photograph outside Carrickfergus Castle.

Action from the World Combat League
Action from the World Combat League

WCL Turf Wars Weekly Newsletter

SAN ANTONIO - When the lights went off in the Freeman Coliseum, the New York Clash and the Los Angeles Stars were the two teams left celebrating in a storm of confetti. At the conclusion of the World Combat League regular season, if you would have reseeded all eight teams based on regular season performance:

L.A would be number one and New York would come in at number eight. They took different paths to the finals but both teams deserve to be called conference champions and both will have a shot to be crowned world champions.

The show opened with the New York Clash taking on the New Jersey Tigers. Free agent pick-ups Abraham Han and Tom Grimmer did battle at 164 lbs.

Han scored quickly with his left hand, knocking down Grimmer on three occasions with one minute left to go. At the 20 second mark an overhand right followed by a left hook put Grimmer on the mat again forcing the TKO stoppage.

After New York's Leo Valdivia eeked out a 15-14 decision over newcomer Radji Bryson-Barrett, the 147 lbs. starters took center stage.

Muay Thai rivals Shennen Maceo of New Jersey and Rami Ibrahim of New York promised to add another chapter to their story. Maceo came out and controlled the opening minute of the fight until a lazy jab left him exposed for a split second. That second turned into a brutal head kick by Ibrahim. The 15-0 KO put New York in the driver seat with a 47-15.

An impressive debut by Patrick Barry at heavyweight widened New York's advantage and through four contests New Jersey was still searching for their first W. Throughout the season 23 year old Uriah Hall has become by default the Tiger's go-to guy. Hall starts rallies and in this instance stopped a game from getting out of hand. With 90 seconds remaining in his fight with Jaime Fletcher, Hall ate a counter right to a chin. The shot woke him up and beautiful spinning back kick by the big man sent Fletcher to the canvas. Hall was awarded the judge's decision 15-3 and it gave New Jersey a realistic chance of not getting blown out.

WKN Corsican Kickboxing Spectacular

WKN Corsican Cup 2008 Ajaccio, Corsica - Corsican kickboxing found the spirit of the ‘Little Emporer’ as they scored a hard fought fight to win an impressive team victory in Napoleon’s birthplace last weekend (May3).

Local hero Toussaint Andareli, one of the WKN’s top promoters staged a top class international event in Ajaccio on the picturesque Mediterranean island of Corsica. His victory was not just with most of his fighters winning over an international line-up but the former world champion Andareli, now cements the Corsican events as the show to be seen on.

The event kicked off on friday (May nd2) at the press conference and weigh-ins which where onboard a huge cruise liner in the Bay of Ajaccio. All were welcomed onboard, not by the traditional sound of a whistle but instead - drummed onboard by a guard of honour dressed in full Napoleonic wear and if that wasn’t enough the captain of the ship greeted everyone onboard. Promoter Toussaint Andarell was the perfect host - he has been extremely hospitable and can’t do enough to make everyone feel welcome, said a WKN official.

Bird’s In The Ring And Waiting

MARK BIRD said he feels confident after he weighed-in yesterday ahead of his bout for tonight (Saturday 3rd May) on the beautiful island of Corsica. "'I'm so on form, Ive had two good wins in the last month and I am still on a high after last weekend training with K1 legend Ernesto Hoost. That will hopefully give me the boost I need to lift the Corsican Cup.'

Both teenagers, Bird and Salvador will battle it out for the Corsican Cup over four rounds in the light-welterweight division. The popular Lisburn fighter Bird, tipped the scales at 65kg with Dylan Salvador coming in a kilo lighter at 64kg. The match is under the Thai style rules of low leg kicks - a style that seems to suit Mark, said coach Murray.

The press conference
"I thought I’d seen it all but I haven’t." laughed Murray. “The press conference and weigh-ins took place onboard a huge passenger cruise liner in the Bay of Ajaccio, we were welcomed onboard not by a whistle but drummed onboard by a guard of honour dressed in full Napoleonic wear and if that wasn’t enough the captain of the ship greeted everyone of us onboard his vessel. That was a first for me.” said Murray as he went on to say. “Local hero Toussaint AndarellI who is the event organiser has done a great job with everything and has been the perfect host - he is extremely hospitable and can’t do enough to make us feel welcome, I can’t wait to see what he has planned for the event!.”

In brief about Ajaccio - The birthplace of Napoleon, Ajaccio is situated on one of the most beautiful gulfs in the world, surrounded on three sides by mountains that protect it and make it an excellent charter destination. Often described as an elegant city, Ajaccio is attractive for its old town, relaxing cafés and the views of its glorious bay. Visitors to Ajaccio can still visit Napoleon's birthplace.

Strictly Baby Fight Club was no publicity stunt to attract viewers

Belfast’s Billy Murray, one of Northern Ireland’s leading sporting figures has condemned the “barbaric” and “unforgiveable” parents pushing their kids to take part in violent cage fighting as depict in the national press this week and on channel 4 on Thursday 24 at 9pm. Kickboxing’s Murray, who has trained a host of world champions, slammed those taking part in last night's controversial Baby Fight Club documentary on Channel 4. In the show, children as young as five were seen being forced to take part in brutal martial arts contest, roared on by red-faced parents.

“It’s difficult to know where to start with these monstrous contests,” said a furious Murray. “I want to totally condemn the parents who were involved. There is no way those youngsters should have been anywhere near a competitive martial arts ring.

"There was the sickening sight of terrified young kids being put into a cage, not really sure what was happening, and being encouraged by their moronic parents to fight like animals. None to little protection for young bones, and in cases no head guards for young skulls that are still growing. It was barbaric and unforgivable.

"I was hoping it was all a publicity stunt by the producers to cause the sort of out-cry it has and that the programme will show the true essence of the martial arts. Some of the parents involved argued they wanted to give their kids lessons in self defence and that it was also a way of combating obesity." But Murray remains absolutely unconvinced.

“You don’t teach self defence by telling youngsters too young to know better to fight. What sort of message is that sending out?” he fumed. “It’s not just happening in Britain as the sport gets increasingly popular there are fly-by-nights setting up shows all over the world trying to make a quick buck and cutting safety requirements at ringside. I saw to many thing in that programme that made me angry.

"Now is the time for the sports council to take a pro active role to follow suit with the our City Council's support for sport programme and by getting involved in helping regulate the sport. No more shrugging their shoulders by saying it’s not their problem. I will personally contact the sports council again to see if something can be done to prevent this happening here.”

Murray went on to say “In my ProKick organisation we have many parents coming to us who share similar fears about bullying in schools and obesity. We have years of experience building classes for juniors. All of these are built on truth, discipline and respect, but they are also about fun for the children. There is no idiotic talk of combat and there are certainly no ring encounters. If parents are really set on beating bullying they need to help their kids with confidence. We help with confidence and also turn out proud, well mannered kids. I must reiterate that there is none of this horrible underage contact in the ring.”

He added: “We are signed up to the WKN (World Kickboxing Network) organisation – a worldwide sanctioning board – and that doesn’t allow full contact kickboxing until a child is 15 years old and with special written authorisation it can be 13. In all my 30 plus years in the fight game we have had dispensation just once to allow an especially prodigious 13 year old to fight. But that’s it. I was shocked to hear and see that two big kickboxing world bodies WAKO and the IKF sanctioned fights within the aired programme, I'll be writing to both about my dismay.”

Ironically, as the furore was building over Baby Fight Club, Murray was returning from Geneva where he had been launching a European-wide initiative to help take sport to kids. The Fighting For Peace programme was conceived in Belfast.

It will use kickboxing and martial arts to offer kids in deprived cities and political hotspots an alternative and new way of thinking. It has been launched at the UNICEF HQ in Geneva, British and Irish government figures, Irish President Mary McAleese and Belfast City Council amongst others.

“It’s intended to be a force for good. To show kids who think they have no way out that there is another way. It’s exciting to get it started. And having seen what was happening with Baby Fight Club it looks as though it’s more necessary than ever.”
